Hip hop classes in Woodside, Queens

Grounded, rhythmic and taught with its history attached rather than as a style borrowed from a video.

  • Six to adult
  • five classes a week on the group timetable
  • Taught by Danny Ruiz

“Is it appropriate for a seven-year-old?”

What hip hop actually is

Hip hop here is taught by somebody who came up in it. That matters less for the choreography than for the framing: the class knows where the movement came from, the music is chosen for a room of children rather than pulled from a chart, and nobody is asked to perform an attitude they do not have.

In the room

What is actually taught

  • Groove and bounce first, which is the thing that separates dancing from doing the moves
  • Foundational vocabulary — top rock, party dances, the steps that everything else is built on
  • Choreography that changes every few weeks, so the class is about picking things up quickly
  • Freestyle in a circle, from the juniors upward, kept short and kept kind

On the timetable

The classes

Every row is the real class: the day, the room, the teacher and the fee the enrolment system actually charges.

Hip hop at Woodside Academy, Fall Term 2026. The fee is the per-session rate multiplied by the number of times that class meets, which is why two classes of the same length can differ — a holiday falls on a weekday, not on a term.

What it costs

The arithmetic, for one class in full

Juniors with Danny Ruiz is one example. Every other class in this discipline, and every class in the school, is the same sum with different numbers.

How that figure is arrived at

  • Hip hop, Juniors — an hourrate$22
  • Mondays in Fall Term 2026, recess weeks removed× thirteen—
  • Registration, once a school year per studentonce$30
  • Fall Term 2026, this classthirteen sessions$286

$22 is the published rate for an hour, and it is on the fees page. That multiplication is the whole of it: no materials charge, no studio levy and no compulsory extras. A 10 per cent family discount comes off every class after the first, and a student joining part-way through the term pays for the sessions still to come rather than for the ones already gone.

Every term's dates, and the fee for every class

The music, and what we do about the lyrics

Commercial hip hop is written for adults and a great deal of it is not suitable for a room of eight-year-olds. Every track used in a children's class here is either an instrumental or a clean version that Danny has listened to the whole way through — not the first thirty seconds. Parents ask about this more than about anything else in the class and they are right to. If you want the track list for your child's class, ask and you will get it.

Who teaches it

One teacher, and no rota

In a school this size, the person watching a technique in the first week of a term is the same person watching it in the last.

Hip hop and tap

Hip hop and Tap · here since 2016

Teaches hip hop and tap, from four-year-olds to the adult class.

Before the first class

What to wear

  • Clean indoor-only trainers with a flat sole; street shoes are not allowed on the floors
  • Comfortable clothes you can move in
  • A water bottle

Indoor-only means a pair that lives in the bag and never goes outside. It is about the floor rather than about the shoes.

Questions about hip hop

Is the music appropriate for young children?

Every track used in a children's class is either an instrumental or a clean version the teacher has listened to the whole way through, not the first thirty seconds. Ask for the track list for your child's class and you will get it.

Is there a performance or battle team?

No. There is no competition team attached to this discipline or to any other one we teach, and a place in any class or ensemble here is never decided by an audition.

What age can a child start hip hop?

From the age this page's class table shows for the youngest class — currently ages 6 to 8 — and we will tell you honestly on the telephone if a younger child would be better served by a different discipline first.
