Classes for ages nine to twelve

Where technique starts to compound, and where a second class starts to earn its fee.

  • Ages nine to twelve
  • twenty-one classes open to this age
  • eight disciplines to choose from

What ages nine to twelve actually gets

Nine to twelve is the age at which a student who has been in a class for three years starts to look like a dancer or a musician rather than like a child doing a class. It is also the age at which contemporary opens, at which a second weekly class starts to be worth its cost, and at which the conversation about pointe eventually begins.

  • Two classes a week in one discipline is the point at which progress changes character. One is enough; two is different.
  • Contemporary opens at nine, and most students who take it are already doing ballet or jazz.
  • This is the age band with the most waiting lists, particularly on Saturday morning.
  • The string ensemble takes players from this age upward and is the reason violin students stay.

On the timetable

Every class open to this age

Filtered from the whole timetable by age rather than by discipline. Every row is a real class with a real number of places and a fee the enrolment system actually charges.

twenty-one classes are open to this age band. The fee shown is this term's: a per-session rate multiplied by the sessions that class actually meets.

The whole week instead, by day and by studio

What a class here is actually like

In the room: Two classes a week in one discipline is the point at which progress changes character rather than simply doubling — a student meets the same correction twice as often and starts applying it without being told a third time.

The first term: A student arriving at this age with no previous dancing is not behind one who already has a few years of it, in the way a beginner is never behind a veteran of a different age — but the level a student is placed in is honest about where they actually are rather than about what their age suggests it should be.

What it costs: Fees for every class open to this age are in the table above. A second weekly class is charged and discounted exactly as a second class in any other discipline is; there is no package price for taking two.

The most waiting lists in the school, and the pointe conversation

Contemporary opens at nine rather than at six, because the floor work it is built on asks for body awareness a younger dancer has not had time to build. Most students who take it here already have a few years of ballet or jazz behind them.

This age band carries more waiting lists than any other, particularly for the classes that meet on the busiest day of the school's week.

Pointe work is never decided by a birthday. It is decided one student at a time, on ankle and foot strength and on how many ballet classes she is taking, and it is a conversation with Marisol rather than a milestone printed on a form.

A trial is a real class and the student joins in. It is the only evidence about a school that is not marketing, which is why it costs nothing. If the class you want is full you will be offered the waiting list instead, with the position you would be in — a number, not a promise to be in touch.
