Ages 6-8

Classes for ages six to eight

The year most students find the thing they are going to stay with.

  • Ages six to eight
  • thirteen classes open to this age
  • seven disciplines to choose from

What ages six to eight actually gets

Six to eight is where a real technique class starts to be possible: an hour rather than forty-five minutes, a warm-up that means something, and work that is remembered from one week to the next. It is also the age at which most of our students try two disciplines and keep one.

  • Most juniors do one class a week. A second class is a real commitment and it is worth waiting a term before adding one.
  • Classes at this age are capped between ten and sixteen depending on the room and the discipline.
  • This is the earliest age we take group guitar, and it is the age most piano students start.
  • Recital participation is optional and about two thirds of juniors take part.

On the timetable

Every class open to this age

Filtered from the whole timetable by age rather than by discipline. Every row is a real class with a real number of places and a fee the enrolment system actually charges.

thirteen classes are open to this age band. The fee shown is this term's: a per-session rate multiplied by the sessions that class actually meets.

What a class here is actually like

In the room: An hour rather than forty-five minutes, a warm-up that means something, and work a student is expected to carry from one week into the next — the first age at which a real technique class is possible in any discipline we teach.

The first term: Most juniors settle into a weekly class within the first month: the warm-up stops needing explaining and corrections start to land. This is also the age at which a student most often tries a second discipline before settling on what to keep.

What it costs: The table above carries the fee for every class open to this age, worked out the same way every fee on this site is. A second weekly class is charged as a second class rather than folded into a package, and the family discount applies to it.

One class is plenty; a second is a commitment

Most juniors take one class a week, and one is enough at this age. A second class is a real addition to a family's week rather than a small extra, and it is worth a full term in the first class before adding one.

This is where most of our students find the thing they end up staying with for years — not because the first class anyone tries is always the right one, but because trying a second one at this age costs less, in every sense, than it will later.

A trial is a real class and the student joins in. It is the only evidence about a school that is not marketing, which is why it costs nothing. If the class you want is full you will be offered the waiting list instead, with the position you would be in — a number, not a promise to be in touch.
