Guitar lessons in Woodside, Queens

Taught in small groups, because a beginner guitarist learns faster in a room with other beginners.

  • Eight to adult
  • three classes a week on the group timetable
  • Taught by Jonah Feldman

“He wants to play electric. Do you make him start on classical?”

What guitar actually is

Guitar is the one instrument here that is taught in a group by default. Six beginners in a room learn faster than six beginners in six rooms: the repertoire is shared, the rhythm is external, and nobody has to be the only person who cannot yet change chord in time. Private guitar lessons exist for students who want them, and most students move to one eventually.

In the room

What is actually taught

  • Nylon-string instruments for the first year of the junior groups, because they are kinder to a child's fingertips
  • Chords, single-line playing and reading from the start, rather than chords for a year and then a difficult conversion
  • Playing together from the second lesson — parts of different difficulty over the same piece
  • Electric and steel-string from about twelve, in private lessons, once the left hand has been built

On the timetable

The classes

Every row is the real class: the day, the room, the teacher and the fee the enrolment system actually charges.

Guitar at Woodside Academy, Fall Term 2026. The fee is the per-session rate multiplied by the number of times that class meets, which is why two classes of the same length can differ — a holiday falls on a weekday, not on a term.

What it costs

The arithmetic, for one class in full

Group guitar, beginners with Jonah Feldman is one example. Every other class in this discipline, and every class in the school, is the same sum with different numbers.

How that figure is arrived at

  • Guitar, Group guitar, beginners — forty-five minutesrate$18
  • Tuesdays in Fall Term 2026, recess weeks removed× thirteen—
  • Registration, once a school year per studentonce$30
  • Fall Term 2026, this classthirteen sessions$234

$18 is the published rate for forty-five minutes, and it is on the fees page. That multiplication is the whole of it: no materials charge, no studio levy and no compulsory extras. A 10 per cent family discount comes off every class after the first, and a student joining part-way through the term pays for the sessions still to come rather than for the ones already gone.

Size matters more than anything else at the start

An eight-year-old on a full-size guitar is learning to compensate for an instrument that does not fit, and every one of those compensations has to be undone. Guitars come in fractional sizes and the school keeps three-quarter and half-size instruments to lend for the first term so that nobody buys the wrong one. This is also the reason we do not take guitar students below eight — not the attention span, the arm length.

Who teaches it

One teacher, and no rota

In a school this size, the person watching a technique in the first week of a term is the same person watching it in the last.

Before the first lesson

What to bring

  • The instrument, if it is one that travels; the school keeps loan guitars and violins for the first term
  • A notebook, which the teacher writes the week's practice into
  • Any music you have been given, in a folder rather than loose
  • Nails short for guitar, violin and piano

You do not need to buy an instrument before the first lesson and you should not. Talk to the teacher first — the wrong size is worse than none.

Questions about guitar

Why are guitar lessons taught in groups?

Because six beginners in a room learn faster than six beginners in six rooms — the repertoire is shared, the rhythm comes from outside the student's own head, and nobody is the only person who cannot yet change chord in time.

What size guitar does my child need?

Almost certainly not a full-size one. Guitars come in fractional sizes and the school keeps three-quarter and half-size instruments to lend for the first term, so that nobody buys the wrong one before anybody has checked.

Can my child switch to electric guitar?

Yes, from about the age this page's class table shows for the continuing group, and it happens in a private lesson once the left hand has been built on a nylon-string instrument first.
