Violin and musicianship

Priya Raman

Teaches violin, the string ensemble and musicianship.

  • Teaching here since 2018
  • four classes on the current timetable

Background

Priya plays in freelance orchestras across the city and teaches here three days a week. She takes violin from the beginning — including the part almost nobody warns parents about, which is that the first six months sound bad in a small apartment and there are things that can be done about that.

She runs the string ensemble, the only group in the school where a beginner and a seven-year veteran are in the same room by design. A second violin part written for someone in their fourth month is a real part, and playing it beside somebody who is good is worth a term of scales.

Musicianship — reading, rhythm, ear — is taught as its own class rather than being squeezed into the end of an instrument lesson, which is where it usually goes to die.

The reason to learn to read music is that it makes the lesson shorter and the practice better.

The timetable

Every class Priya teaches

Every class Priya Raman teaches this term, with the Fall Term 2026 fee for each — the per-session rate multiplied by the number of times that class actually meets.

Every fee here is a rate times a number of sessions. Every fee on this site is a per-session rate multiplied by the number of times the class actually meets in that term. The multiplication is shown rather than the answer, because two classes of the same length in the same term can honestly cost different amounts when a holiday falls on one of their weekdays.

What Priya teaches

  • Violin — One to one, with an ensemble to play in from the first year — which is the part that makes people stay.

What to expect in this class

Expect the first months of a beginner's violin to sound exactly as difficult as everybody warns and almost nobody quite believes until it is their apartment, a seat in the string ensemble from the first term whether a player is new or well along, and musicianship taught as its own subject rather than squeezed into the last five minutes of an instrument lesson.
